Dine on pierogi, Polish sausage, sauerkraut, kabobs, pizza, hot dogs and beer at the 31st annual cultural celebration of Polish traditions, where Polish and American bands play everything from rock to blues to polka music on five stages. Also features costumed folk dancers, a Sunday mass, arts and crafts and kids’ activities. Billed as the “largest Polish fest in Chicago,” the outdoor event takes place on the grounds of the cultural center. Entertainment schedule…

JoMarie Dugan found herself struggling with what kind of fundraiser she could create to support the Prairie Players Theatre Academy, an educational entertaining group in central Illinois. Then one night, she dreamt about a renaissance festival. With literally $1.39 in her pocket, she proceeded to create what would become the Illinois Renaissance Festival.

Dugan, the director of the Illinois Renaissance Festival, or IRF, has been putting the festivals together since 2003 and attributes her inspiration to her love of history and theater.

“I do not get paid for this. I have not been paid since 1997,” Dugan said. “My pleasure is to see the performances and see everyone have a good time.”

Every year, a portion of their revenue is donated to a different charity, and this year’s IRF donations are being given to Habitat for Humanity. Kittye Williams, assistant director of IRF, emphasized the purpose of IRF as a fundraiser that “brings to life 16th century England wherein patrons can step back in time to forget their cares, worries and stresses, and remember what it is like to laugh and enjoy life.”

A lot of entertainment will be provided, which includes weapon demonstrations, a gypsy encampment with belly dancers and fire eaters, village carriage rides and “war horse” rides.

The festival also offers a “King Henry’s Parliamentary Political Smoker” event in which local politicians will compete in several games. Vendors at the festival will be selling various items such as food, jewelry and pottery, and there will be music entertainment including singers and minstrels playing music.

Dugan also said that there will be a Viking demonstration and Shakespeare comedy group, as well as a children’s area with kid-friendly games and food.

The main entertainment of the festival, however, is Rodney Woodworth’s portrayal of King Henry VIII. The festival itself is intended to resemble a country village during King Henry VIII’s reign.

Dugan said that it is the interaction of the entertainers with the visitors which sets this Renaissance festival apart from others, especially Woodworth’s approachability with patrons.

“I’ve been to festivals where the entertainers have their noses up in the air and don’t talk to anyone,” Dugan said. “King Henry was loved by the common man and Rodney portrays that well. You ought to see him with the children. It’s wonderful, and you don’t see that type of interacting in a lot of places.”

-

Illinois Renaissance Fair

Woodworth said that a common misconception with King Henry VIII is that he was an “ogre who killed his wives,” but in reality, he was a much more complex person. Besides his influence on medicine and hygiene, Woodworth said his character greatly influenced his kingdom both politically and religiously.

“He was this very athletic, ambitious, and passionate person,” Woodworth said. “He loved women, food, politics, and his children fiercely, and he had this love of life and loved to laugh.”

Woodworth’s presence as an influential figure, along with the other entertainers, is intended to serve an educational purpose.

“A lot of people are coming because it’s a learning experience,” Woodworth said.

The festival takes place on Aug. 28 and 29 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Danville’s Ellsworth Park. General admission is $6 for adults. Twenty-four vendors and 22 performing groups will be present, including Paragon Jousting team, which will provide entertainment at 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on both days.

Its all that jazz -- and so much more this weekend in downtown Woodstock for the third annual Woodstock Jazz Festival.

Starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, the Woodstock Square will be filled with the smooth sounds and rolling rhythms of 11 different area jazz groups from around northwest Illinois. The groups will be performing over the course of the entire weekend at different local restaurants and cafes.

STAGE LEFT CAFE
7:00 PM Roger Panella Trio
8:15 PM Paul Abella Quartet
9:30 PM Chris Greene Quartet

“I love jazz music,” said Billy Denk, president of Jazz in the Square, the nonprofit group that puts on the jazz festival. “I perform jazz music. When we first started (putting this festival together) we did not have a venue to feature jazz performance in the community.

“The response has been very positive. We have seen the audience grow and the number of jazz fans continue to grow.”

The first ensemble, Typhanie Monique with Neal Alger, takes the stage at 7 p.m. at the Stage Left Cafe, located next to the Woodstock Opera House on East Van Buren Street. The performance includes two other jazz groups, the Shawn Maxwell Quartet and Elaine Dame with Kyle Asche, and costs $10.

But for those looking for a free jazz fix, have no fear. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, four different jazz groups will be performing for free in the Woodstock Square.

New this year is a jazz clinic on Duke Ellington and the imagery within his music. The clinic is open to all ages and Jazz in the Square asks only for a $5 donation.

The clinic will include a multimedia presentation that discusses the life of Duke Ellington and explains the meaning of his music.

“Duke Ellington was such an important American,” Denk said. “Not just as a musician, but as a composer, Denk said. The mission of (Jazz in the Square) is to provide jazz and music education.”

Jazz in the Square first began in 2007. The group meets two times a month in downtown Woodstock at Stage Left Cafe for jazz jams. Jazz musicians of all ages are welcome.

Jazz jams allows professional musicians to interact with younger musicians, Denk, a guitar player, said. The culmination of all of this is the jazz festival.

This year Jazz in the Square also has more groups from Chicago, a trend organizers hope will continue in the years to come.

“We want to see more groups from Chicago,” Denk said. “All of our performing groups are local because we want to feature groups from the region We definitely expect it to be standing room only this year.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL ON MILLENNIUM PARK’S CHASE PROMENADE SOUTH, AUGUST 23 – 27, 2010

CHICAGO, IL (August, 2010) – This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program and in celebration, the 5th Annual Chicago Sister Cities International Festival will be held on Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade South on August 23 – 27, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily. With all 28 of Chicago’s international sister cities represented, this festival truly represents the diversity and international spirit that exists in the city.

-

The festival will transform Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade South into an international village filled with food, music, dance, and merchants. Visitors to the festival will be able to sample international cuisine such as Ukrainian crepes or Colombian empanadas, shop for African art or fair trade goods, all while watching traditional Korean dancers visiting from Busan, Korea or Chinese acrobats from “Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9”.

Chicago is also celebrating the Year of Mexico and to highlight the sister city relationship with Mexico City, Casita Azul Folk Art – one of the many participating merchandise vendors – will have a Huichol Yarn Artist onsite who will demonstrate this unique art form by creating colorful yarn and bead masterpieces on beeswax.

New this year!

The International Festival will feature a Cultural Corner that is specifically geared towards children ages 5 to 10 years old, but provides activities that the entire family can enjoy. Children will be able to gain exposure to the world through hands-on activities such as creating traditional Japanese paper fans and Greek shields.

“Chopin in the Park” celebrates 200 years of Chopin and the 50th Anniversary of the Chicago -Warsaw Sister City relationship. Daily performances will be held at Millennium Park’s Monroe Street Balcony.

Fans can experience the World’s Game by joining the Chicago Fire Soccer Club on the Great Lawn where they will be able to take shots at an inflatable goal and meet the Fire’s mascot – Sparky.

The Chicago Sister Cities International Program in collaboration with Share Your Soles will launch a city-wide shoe drive at the International Festival, where Share Your Soles will have shoe drop-off bins available. The public is encouraged to bring their gently-used shoes – men’s, women’s and children’s shoes are all needed, especially gym shoes and cleats.

Participating performers in the 5th Annual Chicago Sister Cities International Festival are outlined in the following week-at-a-glance calendar. The performance stage will be inside the festival tent located on Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade South.

About Millennium Park

Millennium Park, managed and programmed by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, is an award-winning center for art, music, architecture and landscape design. The result of a unique partnership between the City of Chicago and the philanthropic community, the 24.5-acre park features the work of world-renowned architects, planners, artists and designers. Among Millennium Park’s prominent features are the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the United States; the interactive Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa; the contemporary Lurie Garden designed by the team of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel; and Anish Kapoor’s hugely popular Cloud Gate sculpture. Since its opening in July 2004, Millennium Park has welcomed more than 20 million people, making it one of the most popular destinations in Chicago.
